I’m always amazed at how simple the concepts are that Rey shares with me. I’m also astounded at how difficult it sometimes is to put these simple concepts into effect.

When I first met Rey he suggested a simple practice to help
me get started. Always answer the question “how are you?” with “I’m
happy!” “You don’t have to believe it”
he promised. Just say it every time and make the choice to be happy when you
wake up in the morning and your life will change.
I thought that was pointless. How can I choose to be happy
when I’ve got bills I “can’t” pay, things I “can’t” do, stuff I “can’t” buy,
places I “can’t” go, stress I “can’t” handle… His second suggestion was to
eliminate the world “can’t” from my vocabulary. I decided to follow his lead
and apply this seemingly simple and ridiculous approach to my everyday routine.
This thing “can’t” really work. What a coincidence I
thought. I continued to do it anyway. Every day, every time someone asked “how
are you?” I replied with “I’m happy”. I was always meeting new people because
we go out a lot. I never really enjoyed hanging out so much and dreaded polite
conversations with strangers. I really felt like I’m too old for partying and
wasting my time talking to people who “can’t” help me.
Whenever I met someone new they would eventually ask “how
are you? and of course I would reply with “I’m happy.” I started getting gig
offers and invitations to events I didn’t think about going to because I didn’t
have the money. Suddenly people wanted to do things for me and with me again. I
got my groove back. My life is once again exciting, exhilarating and filled with inspiration.
