Djembe!

Many years ago when I was living in Germany, maybe 1994, a very dear friend of mine Linda Rosenkranz who has the distinction of being one of the few female piano builders in the world, promoted a drum workshop at her farmhouse in a small village near Oldenburg where I was living at the time.

Why am I thinking about this now? Playing Djembe with David and friends brought back the more than 30 year old memories of the farmhouse in the woods where we "musicated" for three days and nights. It was a delightful afternoon and I'm happy to say I picked up the rhythm pretty fast. I'm all in now and I'm getting my own drum to add to the repertoire of Instruments I can play.

Playing with David reminded me of just how much fun I'd had in Germany and is just the boost I needed to get out and meet the local PVR artists. Any musical Expats in PVR? Let's get together and jam!

Today was another blessed day! We'd already gone swimming twice, once with our dog "Bruno" and once just the two of us so I could continue my diving lessons. I'm still learning to conquer my fear of water and Rey is just an amazing and protective teacher. We parallel dive about 5 meters down so I don't feel so alone. He stays where I can see him and is always ready to help me out if I get a little panicky. My courage is growing rapidly. Soon I will challenge myself to swim from Playa Mismaloya to Los Arcos Marine Park.

Alternating between work and play, we went home, showered, had a bite to eat, spent a little time conceptualizing our project and returned to the beach to watch the sunset. Our favorite spot at the end of the beach protected from the rising surf and offering shade from the hot sun was already occupied by a Mexican family of six. This very animated family was having so much fun talking about I don't know what (my Spanish is still pretty awful) while barbecuing between the boulders.

We were going to distance ourselves from them so they could have their privacy, but they were really friendly and invited us to join them. I'm glad we did. Javier and Javier - father and son were visiting with their mom and grandson Brian from Chihuahua. Javier's (Jr.?) best friend David traveled from Guadalajara with his young daughter to meet them here in Mismaloya.

David bought his Djembe and Javier began to sing as he played the drum. We had a marvelous jam session, ate good food and partied the Mexican way! I love this country and it's people. I'm going to stay here forever!

Freedom and Joy

So I’ve actually been back in Mexico all of 4 weeks and find it hard to break away from the fascination of the flora and fauna to concentrate on working. We are in the rainy season. It storms approximately 1 to 4 hours a day (sometimes at night) and then the sun shines full blast.

Nothing stops the locals from going to the beach! The short cut from the main street to the beach passes our house and I watch people going and coming, walking through the rain in their t-shirts, shorts and bathing suits. I’m thinking “it’s raining. I’m not going to the beach because I’m going to get wet”. Then I laugh because that’s an oxymoron if I’ve ever heard one.

By the time I get into my bathing suit and out the door the rain has turned into a gentle drizzle and I enjoy the coolness as it sprinkles my body. El Rey and I walk bare foot across the bridge that connects us to the main road that leads us to the beach 3 minutes away. Music is playing and the wonderful smells of garlic spiced Mexican food fill the air as we arrive on the beach.

Everyone greets you here even if they don’t know you. “Hola, Buenos Dias” I reply to these people who look me directly in the eye and smile. I’m already making friends here although my Spanish is dramatically bad. Everyone is amazingly patient and helpful. They love us here and American politics has not dampened their welcoming spirit.

I’m becoming a much better swimmer and El Rey is teaching me to dive. No equipment, no masks, no snorkel. Just goggles so I can see underwater. I don't plan to go so deep so I don't think I need anything more.  At first I just swim beneath the waters surface. I watch El Rey swim to the bottom were there are thousands of fish. He grabs on to a boulder to help him stay under longer. I’m amazed at how deep he can go and how long he can hold his breath.

I want to do it too so I surface, take a deep breath and try again. This time I get a little deeper. The fish are swimming around me and I’m excited and exhilarated. There are thousands of fish of every sort and many species that I don’t recognize. They are all beautiful and living at peace in the ocean and I am swimming with them.
.
I think to myself over and over again, this is heaven and I want my family and friends to experience the freedom and joy of living here. We return home and continue to work on our project.
